Default Advice please

Back in September 2009, I was told by members of this site to get a 10" RE sub and a 1600 watt Brutus Hifonics amp. It sounded GREAT until it blew in January 2010. Unfortunately, I did not get the warranty. In January, a guy a BestBuy recommended I get a 10" Alpine type E to use with the 1600 hifonics watt amp. I had that for about a month and that blew. This time, I got the warranty. So my plan was to go to BestBuy today, get the replacement sub, and sell it on eBay. I will also be selling the blown Apline type E (for parts). With the money I make from selling all this, I want to get a new sub (preferably 10" so I dont have to buy a new box. Any ideas?

The guy at BestBuy also said that the amp I have is wayyy too powerful for an Alpine type E and he recommended an Alpine type R. I am not really trying to spend that much money and I plan on keeping my amp, capacitor, and alpine head unit. Is there anything you guys can recommend that sounds great, that is affordable and that wont blow with my 1600 watt hifonics amp.

You just have the one sub? 4 ohm?
Alpines are pretty loud spl type sub and likely why it was recommended, however they are not exactly underrated in the power they can handle. not sure how much the actual rms output of the Brutus is, but i recommend you look into different brand of subs.

if you want to keep the spl loud type subs, might check into MTX, they have some good 10" subs that can take the power. I would also mention kicker L7's but requires a different box but i've gone way over power limits with those too.
Maybe RF power subs, but not the cheap P1's or whatever they are.
some may recommend audiopipe but those are cheap crap imo.
probably better off to look at hifonics subs, though most 10's typically arent rated too high, if so their likely pricey. might be worth it to look into a 12 and new box....depending on amp output that is.

for SQ, maybe DD's or Fi.
but you really need to research to find the actual output of your amp, so you know what sub ratings to look at, most of your expensive, higher end models can handle way more power than they are rated.

Also, i assume you were not abusing it...excessive gain, clipping...etc. stuff that will kill any sub.

This member (me) would never of recommended that garbage to begin with and if I am reading right a type E on the brutus was recommended by Best Buy? Just goes to show that Best Buy recommendations are as crappy as the internet.

Get a type R, make it sure it fits the enclosure and the enclosure is the proper airspace for it... buying a woofer to fit a hole is just as ignorant as the Best Buy advice on the E

^ but didnt he say he already had a Type R and it blew to begin with? assuming his install is proper, they only rated at 500 watt for both coils. i blew 3 of these with a 600.1bd RF amp and i always thought that amp sucked. i can only imagine what a brutus 1600 would do.

He needs to find the actual output of his amp first if he's goin to use cheaper subs. IF he is pushing say 800 watts or something, thats way too much for a 10" Type R to handle for very long from my experience

ah, correct, he said an RE sub...for some reason i was thinking alpine assuming he meant type r.
its what happens from long work hours

though he may still eventually blow that Type R the same. maybe if he wired it down to 8 ohms, assuming his amp is pushing quite a bit of power. 8 ohm load on the amp may help a lot.
