Default ipod directly to an amp??

Probably another stupid question. But I'm building a car that will be for occassional use. I was thinking about just using my ipod for music. Can you connect an ipod directly to an amp using the same type of cable you would use to connect it to your home stereo system??? Basically a jack that goes into the headphone connection but has rca connections on the other end. Can you just connect the rca connections to an amp and be done with it ???
