View Full Version : HELP!!!! Fabrics and finishing!!!
Okay all. I am not as good at fabrication as some here but I am okay.....
However, I am absolutely Horrible at picking the colors and textures needed for finishing my projects.
In this case I have no "car audio fashion sense"
Can you guys please help me with suggestions as to how to finish my install.
I have some assortments of fabrics already, but I wont let those be known because I want to have a blank plate of ideas from you guys.
I usually go with factory matching stuff (SEM textured and coated) but I want a little more flashy this time....
I would like to stay away from Paint on this also. I dont have the facilities to do it anymore and I want it to be classy. (not to say that paint isnt classy)....
I am going for a JBondox , streeteffectz.com, Dubber02, or HZEMALL look.(the first that come to mind) I would like to up-class the current factory finishing....There is WAY too much plastic and cheap materials. I like Suede but in moderation....I did plan to do the headliner in some other material...It is too light in my opinion. I have flocking skills and decent vinyl stretching skills. I have NO sewing skills at all but I would love to learn
I hope to get everything looking good and actually finish my own install for once!
I will be doing some inserts and a cover for the sub.
Here are some pics of where I am at....(Yes most of yo have seen them)

So please comment and suggest away!!!
Also check out Benchmark Motoring's website, they are the best I have seen at materials matching.

definately have to look at a Range rover also, they have a very classy interior. for starters I would suede the headliner, A,B,C, and D pillars, the dash is up to you, leather is nice, but it will expand and contact so be aware
Good luck

Jim are you seeing leather covered panels expanding and causing more issues than vinyl?

using this picture, use the leather that is the same color as the seats or top dash, but smooth grain, and flat black suede like the 9001 Alcantara for the pillars and headliner. you can also take the leather to the doors because i see it is at the same level as the dash and flows into each other pretty nice.

Alcantar is so freaking rare around here...I cannot find a single place that carries it around here so that I can look a sample...There is one place ,but the guy is a complete AZZhole and I will never set foot in there again....Like he is doing me a favor by allowing me to do business there.
I wish I could just find a place online that I can buy the sample book from....That way I can get a better idea if I am going to like the particular color and texture.

Here is a secret...most cars with leather interiors do not have full leather. The boxing on almost all oem cars is vinyl....they match so perfectly to leather that they even smell similar. This is simply because buying leather by the hide is so expensive, especially when you start talking about the really good british hides. Personally, while I like leather for seating surfaces, I like tweed, or tweed with vinyl sewn in inserts for most everything else (i.e dashboards, door panels, headliners, etc.). If it is your car, do what you like. I had an installer that I worked with that covered his sub enclosure in headliner material. I would not have done it, simply for the durability issues, but that was his work in his car, and he loved it. Same with the dope boys that come into the upholtstery shop wanting "cream and Peanut Butter" on the seats in the 1972 chevy convertible. Its what they want.

if your trying to match a dash or door panel...take the dash pannel or door panel into the upholstry store so that way you can compare color and texture side by side...and then maybe the guy will be nice enough to take the samples out to the car for you next time.

Looking at this.....
What about the top of the box is the lighter vinyl color in the Jeep. To basically match its surroundings. Then the "face" of it...where the sub and the ports are...what about a darker color in the Jeep. There is a darker color right? If not choose one...something contrasting that "goes"...even just a dark gray/graphite/black color. But do it in a fabric...a contrasting texture...like suede, carpet?, tweed?, or even flocking. Which looking at the picture, flocking may not be a bad idea because it seems to have complex shapes that may be difficult to cover well. Look at Ron's (Streeteffectz) latest stuff in the Hummer and FJ? But make sure there is some kind of a good transition or lip or something between the materials. And whatever you decide to go with, make sure you do it throughout the Jeep.

Here...if you decide to do the suede headliner...what about a lighter color for the headliner and the contrasting color for the screen pod? You said you wanted it to be "flashy"...so make sure it stands out.
Just some ideas...
Have fun.
