View Full Version : Really important question before I select an IB 15" sub

I'm still debating on what two 15" subs besides two 15" Brahmas($956) to buy to run IB(with a good seal) in an 91'Ford Thunderbird. I have a clean 550wrms x 2 at 2ohms or 1100wrms mono at 4ohms to easily spare. Have $300-$400 to spend for two 15s. I know the QTS should be at least .4 qts or higher(ideally .7 qts<) up to 1.5 qts or so because of rear waves cancelling the front waves, etc.
Getting dissappointed now.
Here's the problem. I called parts express about the Dayton 15"IB sub and the tech said no more than 150w into each one even though the sub says 350wrms thermally freeair.
Emailed Adire Audio about Running 2 Tempests IB. Though they were "extremely helpful", the tech said they only take 100w at 20hz and 400w at 40hz for each sub freeaired. The Tempests are rated 750 wrms in a box. I thought that you only loose 50% of the power handling in an IB setup?
From what techs are implying, you loose "quadriple" that!
Very disappointing if true!
I would have to purchase many IB subs to make up for the 500wrms without blowing the suspensions!
Need some more help "please" on 15" IB sub "selection"?
Any advice/comments knowing the above would be greatly appreciated. The most knowledgible people I know are on these forums. Thank you.

just keep the gains low on your 550 watts and should be ok. with what ever sub you choose.
If you can only afford $400 why don't you just do 1 brahma for now and give it all 1100 watts. Or go with 2 tempests with the gains low.

Thought about that but not sure if the bass would be adequate to compensate for 600w of mids, 300w of mids/highs in the kicks, and the 200w of rear stage 6x9s for my 2200w SQ system that I'm trying to work it into being a SQ show car.

My concern is that to be stereo or for full efficiency you have to go either two or four subs.

The bass should be omnidirectional and blend with your front stage.
What impedence is your amp stable to?
1 brahma can have an impedence of 1 ohm or 4ohm mono...if your amp is 2 ohm stable then you can run each voice coil off of a seperate channel and you will have left and right info coming out of the sub.

The RFPower1100a2 amp at 13.8v it's stable at 1100w mono into 4ohms or 550w x 2 into 2ohm stereo.
If I was to go with 2 15" brahmas, do you think that Adire Audio does any financing like 5 payments maybe?
I know this is off the wall. Just curious if some companies could do that for a customer.

get 1 brahma. IT is 2ohm per coil. That equals 4 ohm mono. It will handle 1100 watts freeair.
Dan Wiggins demo'd it to me with 1700 watts freeair, on one voice coil.

I was just wondering why you are determined to get the full power out of the amp? If you run it at 4 ohm stereo it's a less damaging 275 x 2, which would give you more options on other subs besides the adire.
Just a thought
also, check these out, they're also a lot less expensive

Yeah, don't bother with the extra power. I would even be heppy with it... It doesn't mean you will overpower the sub. You just need to low down when you hear distortion/compression.

Well guys,
I emailed Adire Audio asking if I can make 3 monthly installments for one 15" Brahma hopefully. So we'll see what happens during the next business day. I weighed all my other options and I really want that one bad!
I would love to send 1100 wrms mono to that sub IB style. If this works out it should sound really brutal. I already started to MDF the trunk already and other vehicle construction graemlins/wave.gif .
