View Full Version : Subs or Ports for SPL

i have just recently started using ported enclosures in my truck so i am fairly new to this. my question is... when using ported boxes for spl is it more important to worry about the facing of the port of the facing of the subs. example: my comp. system is built in the bed of my truck with the pressure being forced through a cut-through going from my bed to my cab- i was thinking about making a box where i use my cut-through as one huge port with the subs maybe facing the back or sides of the bed (i'm pretty much trying to get the pressure to begin at the cut rather than end)
another question is how does the ports being on a different plane (on the side or back of the box)from the sub affect SPL and phase.
thanks guys

Having the subs on the same plane as the port you can use the back wave of the sub to reinfore the SPL score. If you just use the port you might have a loss of spl because most of the pressure is off the cone and the port has more resistance so less spl but if you can get the subs and ports on the same plane and in phase you will have an increase in SPL... If you have a SQ system it might help to have the ports on the rear or side to help increase the low end extension but other than that for SPL keep them on the same plane...
